TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL  STATEMENT   OF  JOB

 

 

The Transportation Supervisor is a classified position under the direction of the Transportation Coordinator. This position plans, directs, manages, facilitates, and supports the day to day bus route operations within the district. Ensures service is provided within the guidelines of the Board of Education, Local, Federal, and North Carolina State Board of Education policy. Responsible for interpreting, recommending, and implementing updated transportation procedures applicable to state statutes for the district. Assists in providing general leadership guidance while promoting a productive workplace environment through shared goals, mutual respect, employee recognition, and equal opportunity. Provides daily oversight, guidance, and coaching to school bus drivers on bus routes, school bus safety, bus driver training, and timesheet documentation. Responds to all stakeholder concerns on behalf of the district and department. Gathers all pertinent operational data to build and manage key performance indicators and action plans to improve overall service delivery. Recommends strategies and solutions for improvements to the Transportation Coordinator. Responds to accidents and ensures timely reporting of all accident reports to the Transportation Coordinator and to the director in the event of the absence of the Transportation Coordinator. The universal nature of job tasks requires a solid working knowledge of school bus transportation department responsibilities, and governing regulations. Reports to the Transportation Coordinator.

 

SPECIFIC  DUTIES   AND  RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL  JOB  FUNCTIONS

Hours are 7:00am – 4:00pm  Monday – Friday.

 

Perform daily TIMS operations for the purpose of ensuring student transportation to and from school.

 

Arranges for substitutes and stand-by drivers or may drive a bus to cover absences for the purpose of providing adequate coverage to meet the transportation needs of the students.

 

Maintains an effective safety mindset among department employees, school staff, students, and the public.

 

Receive, review, and resolve difficult and sensitive parent and citizen inquiries and complaints; confers with school authorities on disciplinary problems of student passengers. Updates Transportation Coordinator regarding resolutions.

 

Perform monthly review of the transportation operational areas to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines. Analyzes school bus routes, maintenance vehicle reports, and

other department Transportation Management Information System (TIMS) indicators to detect compliance with all safety aspects of bus operations and annual inspections.

 

Prepare and complete various departmental reports for submission to the LEA, the State, and other agencies as required. Review reports before submission with the Transportation Coordinator.

 

Conducts on-scene evaluations for the purpose of ensuring work quality, performance and production, and assuring that staff performance is meeting established standards and expectations.

 

Completes payroll for Drivers/Safety Assistants.

 

Submit maintenance repair daily log to mechanics notifying them of any mechanical problems reported.

 

Respond and investigate vehicle accidents and incidents or other student emergencies involving school buses, staff vehicles, and contract carrier vehicles. Complete accident reports and notify Transportation Coordinator and required Administration Staff.

 

Assists Transportation Coordinator with pre-employment review with newly approved bus drivers at the time of hire. Outlines state/LEA/departmental policies and presents and discusses the Employee and School Bus Drivers Handbooks.

 

Assists in coordination of Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug Testing (Random Quarterly Drug Testing is

Required).

 

Coordinates and schedules annual and quarterly school bus driver/safety assistant meetings and trainings.

 

Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Transportation Coordinator and Director of Support

Services.

 

ADDITIONAL  JOB  FUNCTIONS

 

Must be available by telephone or radio communication during bus operation hours to respond to emergencies, bus accidents, and concerns.

Responds to emergencies including after-hours situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns in the event of the Transportation Coordinators Absence.

Presents a positive public image to the community.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Performs other related work as required.

 

MINIMUM    TRAINING  AND  EXPERIENCE

 

Graduation from high school, associate degree preferred. Must be skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, spreadsheets, and the Google platform. Knowledge of school transportation, equipment, and applicable practices and regulations. Must possess or is willing to obtain a current North Carolina commercial driver’s license with proper endorsements to drive a school/activity bus, pass a DOT drug /alcohol test and DOT Physical. Must have strong administrative, technical, and communication skills.

 

KNOWLEDGE,  SKILLS, AND  ABILITIES

 

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation management.

Considerable knowledge of federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations governing transportation operations.

Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the field of transportation

management.

Working knowledge of the Transportation Information Management System (TIMS). Ability to use common office machines.

Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with employees, agency representatives, and the general public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
