Candidate must have a two year associate's degree or 48 college credits to be eligible for this position.
Under general supervision, Behavioral Assistants are responsible for providing support and capacity in behavioral and clinical services for students with disabilities. Their duties include addressing behavior management safety needs, supporting emotional and social needs, giving academic support, and implementing behavioral improvement plans. They also deal with physical management, behavior de-escalations, and undertake student reviews with the teacher regularly. Behavioral Assistants will also collect data, write student reports, and ensure adherence to health and hygiene protocols. School/student assignments may change throughout the year as the need arises or as students improve in independent self -regulation strategies and/or decrease behaviors. Reports to EC Coordinator and building level Principal as per assignments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assists the teacher with planning and organizing instructional duties and activities, cooperates in development and implementation of academic, behavioral, functional, and safety procedures for the classroom;
2. Assists in the preparation of materials for classroom, transition, and other activities that provide maximized learning opportunities for the students and enhance the classroom environment;
3. Maintains awareness of goals and objectives of the supervising teacher as well as the individualized learning programs (IEPs) of the students;
4. Provides information to the teacher concerning the student, classroom environment, transitions, academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and functional needs, progress, and concerns of students;
5. Manages/assists with functional needs of students, which may include toileting, changing, transitioning, etc., as detailed by the student's IEP;
6. Assists with interventions/strategies for the student to use to self-regulate their behaviors when potential problematic situations arise;
7. Accompanies and monitors the student through the school building and during transitions between classes;
8. Monitors the daily progress and maintains a daily documentation log on student(s);
9. Provides/assists in instruction of prosocial skills for student(s), as appropriate;
10. Carries out assigned duties in a prompt and responsible manner to ensure a safe and healthful environment, including but not limited to, stocking of items for student’s functional needs, maintaining classroom records/data in accordance with applicable rules, laws and regulations, knowledge of how to use required equipment to assist meeting the needs of students;
11. Exhibits positive behavior toward children, parents, staff and administrators, in addition to communicating the needs of the school and children to the teacher, and administrator in a positive manner as well as conducting themselves as a positive role model in the school and community;
12. Shares the responsibility for school cleanliness and neatness, especially inside the classroom;
13. Uses approved techniques when necessary to safely restrain a student when the safety of the student(s) and/or others are threatened;
14. Reports any major incidents and/or suspensions to the EC Coordinator and building level administrator before the close of the school day, including generation of required restraint documentation;
15. May assist/lead in district-wide behavior professional development as per appropriate selected behavior program; and,
16. Other duties as assigned.
